Abuzar Madhu

Abuzar Madhu

A dynamic Punjabi-based performing artist, passionately works to decolonize the body and mind, fostering embodied knowledge and a profound connection to culture and the land. Alongside his role as a Theater Teacher, Abuzar is the founder of the Ravi Bachao Tehreek movement, dedicated to uniting voices for the river Ravi. As an advocate for the river’s right to live, flow, and flourish, Abuzar is making a significant impact by combining his artistic prowess with a commitment to environmental advocacy.

Afshan Naz

Afshan Naz

Afshan Naz has done Masters in Fine Arts from Punjab University (PUCAD) Pakistan in 2002. He then worked as an apprentice with Ustad Bashir Ahmed and also as a calligrapher with N.C.A. Currently she works as a freelance artist, regularly participating in art exhibitions in Pakistan and Turkey. He is academically trained in oil mixed medium. He has a keen interest in research and art practice in contemporary and traditional miniature painting, Mughal miniatures, Orientalism, imperialism and modern and contemporary art. Solo painting show at Institute of Art and Design Lahore.

Ali Raza

Ali Raza

Ali Raza is a researcher and translator associated with Shehri Pakistan and Hashiya since 2020. Almost every scripted animation and poster disseminated on Hashiya’s platform is first translated into Urdu through Ali. This material includes a vocabulary that often has no prior Urdu equivalents; as such, Ali’s translation work is core to making Hashiya’s decolonizing ethic accessible and relevant for readers in the Urdu language. He is a key leader of the Progressive Students Collective and was the editor-in-chief of The Students’ Herald, a student publication centring on the political and everyday issues of students across Pakistan. He is a graduate of the Government College University in Lahore.

Aine Anjali holds a BS in Psychology and has 6 months of experience as an Assistant Psychologist at Shalimar Hospital. She is currently pursuing an MS in Clinical Psychology from the University of Lahore, showcasing her dedication to the field of mental health.

Meet Asma Jabeen, a dedicated early years teacher trainer and curriculum developer with a passion for nurturing young minds. With a background in early childhood education, she creates a vibrant and inclusive learning environment where curiosity and creativity flourish.  Asma Jabeen is committed to fostering social and emotional development, ensuring each child’s first school experience is filled with joy and discovery.

Atif Badar

Atif Badar is an exceptionally versatile actor with a wealth of experience spanning various domains. From theater, voice-overs, and screen acting to his role as an acting coach, drama teacher, storyteller, writer, director, drama therapist, dramatic reader, and even a culinary expert, Atif’s career is a testament to his multifaceted talents. His journey commenced in 1993 when he embarked on his acting career with Tehrik e Niswan. Currently, Since 2010 Atif serves as a theater and creative movement teacher in well esteemed schools and college in Karachi. His tenure also includes as an actor for four years with the Katha Theatre Group. As a theatre drama teacher he directed and conceptualized over 130 Long and Short Plays over 13 years, with 25 of them being his original creations. Four of his theater plays have earned the distinction of best play awards. He also worked for Adab Festival and Karachi Literature Festival. Few years ago Atif received PLF award for his best work for Pakistan Learning Festival.

Baela Raza Jamil

Baela Raza Jamil, CEO of Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) centre for education and consciousness and the founder of the Children’s and Teachers’ Literature Festivals in Pakistan as a social movement called the Pakistan Learning Festival. She is an avid promoter of publications for children- a growing portfolio under ITA. A public policy advocate, for right to education 25A, ECCE, girls’ education and empowerment and public private partnerships, Baela leads the Learning initiative of ASER Pakistan, and foundational learning program Chalo Parho Barho(CPB)/ Teaching at the Right Level (TARL). She represents Pakistan as an advisor and board member for Education & Learning innovations at national and global levels.

Bina Jawwad

Bina Jawwad

Bina Jawwad, is a Kathakar and teacher of Kathak at Harsukh. Harsukh believes in exposing students to various diverse activities and inculcating a variety of skills; and Kathak is used as coordination exercise. Kathak is a classical dance dating back centuries and comprising the heritage of the subcontinent. As a challenging art form, it creates self-awareness and expands the mind’s horizons.

Dur-e-Ajam

Dur-e-Ajam is an Assistant Professor of Communication and Media at a public university in Lahore.  Her area of specialization is photography, theory & practice of journalism and media literacy. Being an educationist and a social-sciences researcher Ajam’s aim is to foster a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical field among scholars.

Essam Fahim

Essam Fahim is a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences at LUMS, and is completing his PhD in the Religious Studies Department at the University of Virginia. His research and teaching focus on the philosophy of religion, colonialism and Islamic Law. His current projects engage with the impact of colonialism on Islamic law and as well as attempts to undo these effects, sometimes organized under the rubric of decolonization. Currently, Essam is co-supervising the alternative history supplement project at Hashiya.

Farah Shah

Farah Shah

Farah Shah, District Manager at the Pakistan Literacy Project, Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi, focuses on establishing Child-Friendly libraries in government schools. She collaborates with the School Education Department Punjab and other stakeholders, building capacity for sustainable libraries. With expertise in teacher training and curriculum development, she was a frontline master trainer for distance and blended learning during COVID-19. Farah develops engaging, interdisciplinary content aligned with the Single National Curriculum (SNC-2020).She contributed to the technical and editorial review of Mahol Saheliyan – A trilogy of books on climate justice, approved by the National Curriculum Council and the Ministry of Federal Education. Farah implemented these books in schools and summer camps and authored a children’s storybook on Chitral’s culture for the ITA-Room to Read (RtR) Book Development project.

As a seasoned Digital Safety Trainer and industry professional, I offer a robust skill set honed through my current role as the Manager of Advocacy and Reporting at ITA. my primary focus lies in equipping individuals with essential digital literacy skills and ensuring their safety in the online realm. With a background in training, student counseling, and career guidance, I have successfully empowered individuals to navigate the complexities of the digital landscape. Proficient in strategic planning and effective communication, I am dedicated to fostering a safer online environment. My goal is to contribute to the enhancement of digital safety through a proactive and informed approach. I welcome the opportunity to connect and explore how my expertise can be a valuable asset in fortifying digital safety measures.

Fatima Hameed

Fatima has a MPhil degree in Educational Research from University of Lahore. She has been working with One Earth Toys for the last five years. One Earth Toys is reviving play-based learning opportunities in Pakistan by manufacturing handmade wooden toys and giving workshops to children on how to make wooden products so that they can be engaged in meaningful skill development activities.  Fatima is responsible for production and leads one-eight days long woodwork training sessions in schools and other institutions.

Fatima Jaffar is a human rights activist, who has a diverse working background in the protection of child/women’s rights. She is a Psychosocial counseling expert for youth and victims of GBV/child abuse. She used to conduct mental health and mindfulness activities. She worked for the mainstreaming of Juveniles, children with incarcerated families, and children in labor. She is Alumni of the Exchange program “International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP)” to America on coalition building for Gender-Based Violence. She is leading a project on Child labor since 2017 in Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) to provide education and life skills for adopting alternate earning resources. She will serve PLF as team lead for volunteer management, Registration desk, feedback, and evaluation and also will be in charge of the ITA stall.

Humaira Tehsin is a teacher,  writer and a literature enthusiast. She strongly believes that literature can transform minds, and when coupled with action in the right direction, it can transform lives. As a dedicated member of the core team at Suno Kahani Meri Zubani, Humaira serves as a story writer, passionately working towards creating an inclusive and enchanting world through her words.

Insha Tarim

Insha Tarim, Programme Manager Aawaz II project of ITA, Committed to eradicating Gender-Based Violence and child early and forced marriages. Skilled in leading educational initiatives, including the Single National Curriculum and teacher training programs. Passionate about fostering inclusivity for marginalized communities. Striving to create a world where everyone has equal rights and access to education. She will also be one of the penalist on “child abuse and protection focusing on child mental health, development and growth”

Joshua Dilawar

Joshua Dilawar is from the Institute for Social and Youth Development (ISYD), National Coordinator of YPEER Pakistan, member of the Prime Minister’s National Youth Council. working on youth empowerment, meaningful youth engagement, gender equality, and reproductive health and rights.  Drawing inspiration from his theatre background, Joshua has used art and digital campaigns to cultivate human rights dialogues and call for greater sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) education – empowering young women in particular to have agency over their own bodies.

Joshua’s innovative methodologies are wide in scope with a unifying underlying theme of education in its many forms as a tool for peace and advancement of gender equality.  In recognition of his work on gender equality, SRHR and towards the elimination of gender-based violence, Joshua was awarded with the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute’s Youth Leadership Award, Youth Icon Award and Prime Minister’s Youth Excellence Award.

Khurshid Khan

Khurshid Khan is a social activist and educationalist having professional experienced of around 10 years. He is the co-founder and CEO of TEAM and “Content Writer-TaleemART” as well as working as a teacher in elementary and secondary education department Peshawar. He also worked with Laajverd on environmental conservation and climate change in Gilgit Baltistan and is a team member of cross cultural studies on Kalash Community District Chitral.

Maham-Abid

Maham Abid

Maham is a writer, spoken word performer, researcher, and educationist. She has two publications to her name, comprising poetry and digital art pieces that delve into the themes of mental health and childhood and learning adversities. “Repeat” is a revisit to some adverse childhood events inside and outside classrooms, complemented by digital artwork. The book bravely explores the dark corners of a child’s mind in an era where mental health remains a taboo topic, especially when associated with children.

Possessing an MPhil in Education Leadership and Management from LUMS School of Education, Maham’s research interests revolve around exploring the landscape of non-formal education in Pakistan and establishing inclusive and trauma-informed educational settings. Throughout her career, Maham has collaborated with a diverse range of learners, including those from high-cost and low-cost mainstream schools, out-of-school individuals, and high-functioning learners with special needs.

Mariam Farooqi

Mariam Farooqi

Mariam Farooqi works as National Project Officer for Culture at the UNESCO Field Office in Islamabad. She is currently working on several UNESCO initiatives to safeguard tangible and intangible cultural heritage, and to integrate heritage and arts into learning in schools, museums, and cultural spaces.
She is a Fulbright alumna, and holds a Master’s degree in the History of Art and Archaeology from New York University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Humanities from the Lahore University of Management Sciences.

Mina Malik

Mina Malik

Mina Malik is an Oxford-trained and internationally published poet, writer and co-founder of The Peepul Press, the indie publishing house that publishes Risala, a gorgeous print magazine in English for and by Pakistani kids. Mina is the Prose Editor at The Aleph Review and was the host of Kahani Corner, an online storytelling show. She’s run children’s writing workshops with the British Council and Karachi Wellness Festival, and regularly does dramatic readings for kids.

Hassan Tahir Latif is a literary editor, writer and photographer based in Lahore. He’s a co-founder of The Peepul Press (an indie publishing house behind Risala), Managing Editor at The Aleph Review (a print and digital creative anthology) and has worked in various other capacities in the publishing sector for the last seven years. Hassan has also been part of the education sector, public and private, where he has held numerous creative writing and counselling workshops.

A classical Kathak dancer and teacher, she completed her postgraduate studies in South Asian Studies (Intensive) at SOAS. Her thesis explored the trajectory of classical dance within Pakistan, with a focus on Lahore. Currently, she teaches classical dance at LGS 1a1.

Muhammad Tayyab, currently serving as an Assistant to Team Lead in Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA), facilitates publishers, writers and illustrators in producing children’s storybooks. With a background in teaching politics, history, and gender studies, he has also worked as an Academic Writer. Beyond his professional roles, he actively contributes to Peace Without Borders-Pakistan, promoting harmony among diverse communities. Additionally, Tayyab has published research on the status of child rights in Pakistan, showcasing his commitment to social causes and advocacy for the well-being of children.

Obien Mayo is an audiologist by profession, but writing is his passion and creative outlet. In addition to co-authoring numerous anthologies worldwide, he is the author of three books. The climate crisis and human rights are the main topics of his writings. Obien believes in a world of harmony and enjoys reading and music.

Rai Mohsin Raza is founder of Science Education Alliance (SEA) that works for hands – on learning of Science and Art in Government and Low- Fee Private Schools. He is an educationist and activist. He has more than 12 year experience of school leadership and management. He works for School education reforms in Pakistan through teacher training workshops, Science and Art Workshops, leadership trainings and parents’ workshops in schools. He promotes Teaching and Learning of Science through Art (Visual and Performing Art) that encourages students to love science and art both at the same time. He is also work for Ravi Bachao Tehreek that aims to bring life in River Ravi.

Rumana Husain

Rumana Husain

Rumana Husain is a bilingual writer, educator, and artist. She has been a teacher at the Karachi Grammar School, Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture, and the CAS School, which she also headed. She co-founded the Bookgroup in 1988 for producing children’s books, teachers’ manuals, and trained teachers all over Pakistan. She later worked at the Children’s Museum for Peace and Human Rights as Head Activism & Outreach. From 2020 to October 2023 she worked as Team Leader for Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi’s Pakistan Literacy Project in partnership with Room to Read, for developing high-quality children’s books in Urdu. Rumana is the author of two coffee-table books: ‘Karachiwala – a Subcontinent within a City’, and ‘Street Smart – Professionals on the Street’. She has authored and/or illustrated over 75 children’s books for several publishers. Four of her books won awards in Pakistan, Nepal, and India. She was a co-founding Senior Editor of NuktaArt, an international art magazine, which was published for ten years. Rumana regularly contributes articles to national newspapers and magazines.

Advocate Sana Afzal, a distinguished Advocate of the High Court, is dedicated to the cause of women and child rights. As the former Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee at the High Court, she has actively fought for the eviction of child abuse in various legal forums. Advocate Afzal’s commitment extends beyond the courtroom, as she engages in meaningful interactions with children and collaborates with influential organizations such as WHO and UNICEF to promote children’s health and women’s rights. Her multifaceted approach reflects a profound commitment to fostering positive change in the sphere of human rights, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Sarwat Mohiuddin

Sarwat Mohiuddin

Sarwat Mohiuddin is a poet, painter, translator and Punjabi and Urdu prose writer. She holds a Master’s degree in Punjabi literature from University of the Punjab. She has to her credit a number of papers on the life and works of the great Sufi poets of Punjab, Portrayal of Women in Classical Literature, as well as on Punjabi Culture and Folk Tradition. She has published four volumes of poetry, ‘Kannian’ (1989), ‘Seik Sunehray’ (1998), ‘Do Phool Khiley Mahiya’ (2000), and ‘Geet Hayati Hoey’ Translation of the Hungarian poet Sandor Petofi, (2007). Her travelogue Raat ki Dhoop (2009) is a detailed study of Swedish and Pakistani culture, customs and tradition. She is a visiting lecturer at various national and international institutes and universities. Sarwat has represented Pakistan at conferences and seminars internationally, and has been honored with various awards both nationally and internationally. Member of the Pakistan Punjabi Literary Board and Vice-President of the Pak-Hungarian Friendship Association, she is also former Executive Chairperson of the Literary group ASG, and former Vice President of the International Women’s Club Islamabad. She holds story telling sessions and book launches of various children’s books at the Children’s Literature Festival (CLF).

Dr. Shahid siddiqui

A renowned educationist, linguist, teacher, researcher, academic administrator, and a prolific writer, Dr Siddiqui obtained his PhD in Applied Linguistics from University of Toronto, Canada, M. Ed TESOL from University of Manchester, UK, and Postdoc research at Oxford University.  He has worked on academic and administrative positions in some prestigious universities such as AKU, LUMS, GIKI, and NUML to name a few. He was Vice Chancellor of AIOU from 2014 to 2018.  He is currently working as Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Media Studies, Art and Design in Lahore School of Economics.  His books include Rethinking Education in Pakistan Perception, Practices, and Possibilities; Education, Inequalities, and Freedom: A Sociopolitical Critique; Language, Gender, and Power: The Politics of Representation and Hegemony in South Asia; Education Policies in Pakistan: Politics, Projections, and Practices; Aadhay Adhooray Khwab (a novel); Zair-e-Aasmaan (Urdu); Mausam e Khush Rang(Urdu) ; Potohar:Khitta-e-Dilruba (Urdu), Ad Pora Khawab (Sindhi), Neem Ghari Khaboona (Pashto), Dream Don’t Die, Pakistan, Education, and 21st Century (Urdu).

Shahnaz Fateh

She is a trainer and activist with over 33 years of experience working with adolescent and young people their Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights issue across the country. She is contribute to the analysis the SRHR situations of adolescents and young people in Pakistan. She is also continuously identifying critical issues facing adolescent and young people including their immediate and underlying causes. She is working with Rahnuma-Family Planning Association of Pakistan.

As an academic associate, my journey with ITA has been a whirlwind of learning, collaboration, and professional development. Interacting with students remains the heart of this experience. Witnessing their enthusiasm for learning and being able to contribute to their educational journey is incredibly rewarding. As I embrace the ever-evolving nature of academia, I am thankful to ITA for these incredible experiences I’ve had so far and for the chance to contribute meaningfully to the academic community. I’ll be conducting Khel Hi Khel Mein Seekhtay Jayein activity at the PLF which is a play-based learning activity designed by a team of education enthusiasts at ITA. The activity aims to make the process of learning fun by engaging kids in an explorative journey of gamified problem-solving.

Taimur Rahman

Dr Taimur Rahman

Taimur Rahman is an academic, musician and socialist political activist from Pakistan. He teaches political science at the Lahore University of Management Sciences. He is the band leader and spokesperson for the political music band named Laal. Rahman uses Laal to advance causes which he holds dear, such as socialism, the plight of labour and the suffering Pakistanis have endured at the hands of religious fundamentalism and authoritarian rule.
He was also one of the leaders of the Communist Mazdoor Kissan Party. He is the author of the book The Class Structure of Pakistan published by Oxford University Press. The book won the Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Award for the best social sciences book about Pakistan in 2012.

Dr Tania Saeed

Dr Tania Saeed is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Pakistan. She is a Co-Investigator for the Education, Justice and Memory (EdJAM) Network. Saeed works on education, citizenship, identity and social justice in the context of Pakistan and its diasporas in the UK and US. She has a PhD (DPhil) in Education from the University of Oxford and is the author of Islamophobia and Securitization. Religion, Ethnicity and the Female Voice (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016), and the co-author of Youth and the National Narrative (Bloomsbury UK, 2020).

Tanveer Shigri

Tanveer Shigri, an Environmentalist, Climate Activist and an Advocate of Sustainable Development Goals. Tanveer Shigri is the Founding President of Pakistan Sustainable Development Goals which is a youth-led organizations in Pakistan focusing on sensitization of mass on SDGs at grass root level. Envisioning a community which is environmentally responsible, free of poverty, injustice & inequality, Mr. Tanveer Shigri is striving to improve the quality of life of marginalized and vulnerable communities in Gilgit Baltistan.

Ustad Hanif Khan

Ustad Hanif Khan

A seasoned musician from Lahore, is a master of classical singing, tabla, and flute. His musical journey began when he stumbled upon the renowned music director Mian Shehryar, leading him to the Baithak of Ghulam Shabbir & Ghulam Jaffer. Despite challenges, his passion for the flute led him to Alexander Neelum and later to Pervaiz Paras, earning him recognition at the All-Pakistan Music Conference. Hanif, facing expulsion for his musical pursuits, emerged as an acclaimed flutist. His expertise extends to teaching, recording, and crafting his own flutes, showcasing a deep connection to the emotional essence of music.

Dr. Uzma Ashiq

Dr. Uzma Ashiq

Dr Uzma Ashiq works in pahchaan as a clinical psychologist, providing counseling to the children and adolescents  affected in trauma of abuse and neglect, having massive experience of working in disaster management and child protection. She also worked on unicef mental health projects and provided training on MHPSS and child safeguarding to all stake holders working with children and adolescents.

Uzma Rafi

Ms. Uzma has been part of LSK (Life Skills for Kids) a project of ITA for the mainstreaming of children involved in the worst form of labour. She received awards on effectively managing school and facilitating students in a well manner. On behalf of successfully closing the project she is now supervising another challenging setup for the rehabilitation of street children. She is also leading ITA’s Vocational Center in Gujjar Colony. In PLF Lahore, she will be the part of ITA’s handicraft stall and will also conduct Science experiments on ITA’s Stem activity stall.

Vicky Zhuang Yi-Yin

Stories are all around us, we just need to see them. In this theatrical storytelling workshop, participants will learn the art of storytelling and how to use the most important tool of a storyteller, their mind and body, to share stories about their communities in a fun way.

 

Vicky Zhuang Yi-Yin is a multi-disciplinary artist and storyteller from Pakistan. She is a first generation Pakistani born, Chinese immigrant. A lot of her work revolves around working on empowerment, diversity and finding strength from within and your identity. Vicky is a co-founder of OLOMOPOLO Media, which focuses on visual, media and performance arts in Pakistan and has created a safe space and platform for expression for young artists. At OLO, she regularly conducts and designs art and theatre activities for youths and young children to help them gain confidence and to learn to express themselves. She has also started The Cheeni Chronicles, a blog that follows her life as a Pakistani Chinese and documents the stories that she wants to tell through film, poetry and prose. She currently is a Drama teacher at prominent schools in Lahore. She is also a writer, director (for film and theater) and singer.

Waqas Bajwa is a social sector specialist, working as Deputy Director Marketing & Partnerships with Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA). He takes initiatives to catalyse the development of society through public private partnerships. He is an expert in launching alliances and networks under resource mobilization under corporate social responsibility. He plans, initiates and execute programs and ensures effective program management, service delivery, finance and market risk management. Waqas Manzoor

Waqas Manzoor

Waqas is an Educationist, Researcher, Performing Artist, Storyteller, and a Photographer. He is the founder & director of a social enterprise named Deep Now that works for the provision of education through the medium of arts. He completed his MPhil in Education Leadership and Management from LUMS, and he also received Shaila and Tahir Andrabi Leadership and Service Award, 2020.Most recently he received Prince Claus Seeds Cultural Practitioner Award, 2023. He has worked on a documentary project that documented the history of folk toys in Punjab that is going to be exhibited on 25th of November in Lahore. He worked on a documentary for Lahore Biennale Foundation Virtual Museum titled, “Dastan-e-Urdu” the work documented 75 years of Urdu in Pakistan. Moreover, in the medium of Performance Art, he has been doing Street Theatre since last 8 years and conducting Performative Storytelling as a freelance storyteller. He organized, directed and produced short plays to perform at a public premise called Khokha Natak. He has worked with an author and translator Musharraf Ali Farooqi in the capacity of Program Manager of an Urdu Storytelling Program, Kahani Se Kitaab Tak. He started his career as an Educator at Sanjan Nagar Public Education Trust Higher Secondary School. He has served the school as an Assistant Coordinator PYP (Primary Year Program). He develops courses and curriculum focusing language and performing art-based for schools.

Pakistan Learning Festival is a social movement founded by the renowned educator-thought leader and activist, Baela Raza Jamil CEO of Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) and co-founded by the internationally and nationally awarded Ameena Saiyid, who headed a multinational corporation and pioneered ‘literature festivals’ in Pakistan; she is the Founder Director of the Adab Festival Pakistan. CLF’s growth is attributed to its open collaboration with numerous private, public, civil society organizations, foundations and development partners. CLF is the first national level largest learning festival with an outreach across Pakistan; it is ITA’s well known flagship program.
